Think Google has made out like bandits since its acquired YouTube? You might just want to reconsider that smarm.
In what is likely to be the first of many deletions retractions removals, YouTube has caved to pressure from a Japanese conglomerate of media interests, and have removed as many as 30 000 videos in violation of international copyright law.
That’s right. If you can’t get enough of crazy Japanese gameshows, you may just have to look for it elsewhere.
While many American companies have cut deals with YouTube, it looks like the higher ups at Google have folded like a cheap suit under the threat of litigation. If this is all it takes for videos to get removed, one wonders how long it will take before we see a more sanitized, neutered version of its racous self.
And once that happens, how long before its cachet runs out then?

Those gameshows were one of the first few vidoes that were sent to me as forwards. You can’t get that kind of programming on US television. What a loss.

[...] In the last little while, I’ve noticed some new, fresh voices on Canada’s tech scene. These include: Deep Jive Interests, which is written by Tony Hung when he’s not busy being a third year resident in internal medicine; and Mapping the Web, which is done by Pixpo.com’s Aidan Henry. Check out Tony’s post today on the "Un-coolness of YouTube", and Aidan’s recent post on the mystery of Dead 2.0, who still hasn’t reappeared on the blogging scene. It’s good to see people offering more insight on what’s happening on the Web these days. Welcome! Subscribe to RSS headline updates from: Powered by FeedBurner [...]
