GooTube Squeezes Techmeme’s Juice For All To See

GooTube! With the acquisition of YouTube by Google, the blogosphere has gone supernova in a posting orgy not seen since … well, I’m not quite sure. Yep, according to TailRank, one of the web2.0-ish news aggregators, it ranks above the North Korean Nuclear Krisis. And while everyone is still bathing in that post-buzz dream-like bliss, its worth mentioning one more interesting thing about the newly formed GooTube – its exposed a little of Techmeme’s underworkings, and more specifically, who it considers Web2.0 opinion makers.

Techmeme, like TailRank, is also another news aggregator, but unlike TailRank, which I regard as an up-and-comer, Techmeme is really a very focused, highly regarded, and well trafficked site for tech news.

Techeme, also (I’m pretty sure), like TailRank and Digg, uses an algorithm to trawl for tech and web2.0 focused news;unlike Digg, for example, however, very little, if any light has been shed on its algorithms for how it finds, promotes, and and aggregates news.

So, I don’t have any news in that arena right now, to be honest. ;)

But what is interesting is that next to every news item is at least one “discussion” item, and each “discussion” item is really a link from another blog.

Of course, not just any blog is listed as a “discussion” item — somehow Techmeme’s algorithm “knows” or assigns a rank to different blogs based on their own level of “importance”, almost creating an analgous Techmeme “Juice”.

After the YouTube acquisition, a million bloggers began blogging about it, and Techmeme, of course, picked up on those discussions. But only a few made it into their “discussion” thread underneath the headline news item courtesy of the Google press release.

Now granted, only blogs who happen to link to that press release will get tacked on to that “discussion” thread (in fact, that’s all you have to do to appear on the discussion thread if you happen to be one of those blogs — just link to the parent blog).

But, much like a “scientist” examining the results of the Big Bang, its interesting dissecting out the blogified remains on Techmeme — because it certainly gives a slim window into whose blogs Techmeme considers to be “important” enough to populate itself, since it seems like everyone who has a blog has been compelled to give their (identical) two cents on the issue.

Here is a short list of blogs which seem to be amongst these “opinion makers”, some of whom aren’t necessarily regarded as obviously A-List, but do provide for some excellent reading:
