As a reader I hope the result is that newspapers move away from relying so heavily on wire service stories and start putting more effort into reporting local, unique news.

It pains me to pick up a copy of the San Mateo Journal and then the San Francisco Examiner and then the San Francisco Chronicle and see the exact same AP stories - even to the point where the comic strips are the same. This is a big reason why I rarely pick up any of the above three - the majority of the articles are a complete waste of time.

So I hope the end result is that papers rely less on wires - but I have the cynical feeling the short term will be the opposite - more complaining about how Google is destroying newspapers.

Nice insight. The big question now is how do newspapers maintain their Web sites as destinations if their content is being aggregated elsewhere - be it on Google News, Pageflakes, etc.?
