So what does Sony do upon hearing that the Playstation 3 is being outsold 6 to 1 by Nintendo’s Wii in Japan?
It announces that its going to start spying on you.
In a round-about way, of course. There’s a great piece over at the Boston.com where Sony is going into a partnership with Nielson so that usage data by gamers on the Sony network can be analyzed by them. This is good news for Sony because in selling that data, they’ll be able to defray the costs of their wickedly expensive console. Now, while I am *sure* that no *personal* data will be analyzed, and that gamer behaviour will only be able to be measured in aggregate, this announcement only seems to make sense from a corporate point of view.
Sony — the company — will be able to defray costs of making their luridly expensive console by selling user gaming habits.
Sure, there are valid reasons to do this and the article brings them up. The gaming market is worth billions but is undercapitalized because advertisers don’t know anything about gamers.
Fine.
But the gamer in *me* says something else. Something like … you know what?
Rather than trying to offset the cost of your gargantuan strategic mistake of making such an expensive machine on the backend by leading to some misunderstandings and possibly creating a(nother) public relations nightmare — why not do the simple thing that will make both gamers AND stockholders happy?
Why don’t you just make better games? Exclusive games? Games that give people a reason to buy a console that for some, is the equivalent of a mortgage payment?
I recognize that it might not be easy, but for land’s sake gentlemen — on a background of failing sales and a summer where reading is otherwise light, this is a public relations firestorm that is just waiting to be lit.

It has seemed to be the cool thing to do do this year: bash Sony and the Playstation 3. Yes the Wii is outselling them. So what? Have you bothered to check out what Sony has in store for this year, and the future. Home? Little Big Planet? Metal Gear? Becoming the entertainment hub of your living room? Nintendo has a neat product. But Sony has the elite, and it will take time for it to show its true colors, because it’s so advanced and no one’s had enough time to develop for the platform.
Oooh their selling user data…so does everybody in the world. Google knows about the pr0n I watch on my computer, so what different is it if Sony has it. I know Google doesn’t necessarily “sell” it, but advertisers have access. The PS3 is not a failure and you will buy one in the future.

On the other hand, debating the superiority of the PS3 vs. Wii and all sundry topics in-between is a bit pointless exercise, so why don’t we leave it at that.
I mean I could go on about how Metal Gear isn’t a PS3 exclusive, how the Wii is changing what you and I think of as “home entertainment center”, and that Home is pretty, but not something that’s going to drive PS3 sales.
But then you’ll fire back with some rejoinders, and we’ll just go on and on.
As for Google selling data and everyone else doing it — you’re right, of course everyone does it. That doesn’t mean that being the first *console* that does it won’t spark some kind of indignation amongst gamers.
You’re right! I just like stopping by here now and then and starting arguements (remember the Apple one a few months back – yeesh!)
I just feel as if everyone and their mom constantly bashes Sony in all media, and I don’t think they’ve gotten the credit they deserve for putting the machine together. So I stick up for ‘em!
