I wish there was a "thumbs up" rating system on this blog post, because I want to thumbs up Stan's comments. :)

As far as having moderators, perhaps they need to just have MORE of them to ensure that these things get taken down within minutes.

In both cases, the victim of the attack was a woman. This is also related to the recent case where the owners of AutoAdmit (a law student BBS) have been sued due to ongoing harassment of female law students.

I wonder, is there something about mass anonymity that encourages misogyny?

Hey Stan,

Yeah -- not sure why Digg likes to keep their moderators under wraps. Kevin Rose has mentioned their existence in passing a few times, but I wager part of it is that they don't want to be seen capitulating to Netscape's model of doing things (or is it merely a behind the scenes tete a tete with Jason Calacanis -- who knows).

The issue with the moderators is that they have be good -- *really* good -- when it comes to making sure clearly inappropriate material doesn't surface to the front page.

I think its an issue of scale.

Digg is so big that if something were to surface on the front page -- even, let's say at 0500 EST on a Sunday morning -- hundreds of people are still going to see it.

The moderators have to be quick enough to take it down within minutes -- not hours.

Are they that good yet? I don't think so. And I think it will require a public relations disaster to make it so.

cheers

I know I'm getting boring with repeating this, but Digg is HEAVILY moderated already. Anyone who spends a lot of time there (like I do), and participates actively, will probably notice this sooner or later.

The thing is, Digg moderators currently act silently and only in the interests of Digg; they will push a story from a stronger media publication to the FP and bury a smaller one (although it had broken the news); they will remove things that can result in lawsuits towards Digg, etc.

I, personally, don't see anything wrong with Digg having moderators. If for no other reason, then to correct the awful typing mistakes that sometimes appear in FP stories. And, of course, the reason you state above is valid: people shouldn't be allowed to use Digg as a vehicle for mob lynch.

I can't understand why Digg feels the need to hide their moderators and constantly push Digg as some sort of ultimate democracy; they have nothing but problems because of it. Every website has some sort of policy. Every forum has moderators. But, the rules for moderating must be clear and VERY transparent. For example, burying a story from some blog and replacing it with a story from Reuters is not nice. But, removing foul language, threats of violence, etc, is perfectly OK.

Have you sent any of your suggestions or concerns to the programmers at Digg? Your concerns are valid, and I think they would appreciate reading them.
