Drew,

Believe me it makes such a huge difference not being tethered to a PC. If you get a dual model (like I describe above) it literally acts like a phone as well. Good good stuff ;)

Cheers

In addition to the IM client, I use skype every once and a while for PC-to-PC calls. I think I need to get a cordless headset for me to use it much -- right now, I have to be sitting in front of my computer to make a call.

I've only used Skype for international, pc-to-pc calls. It helped me to stay in touch with the Spouse on the cheap while on an extended business trip.

I'm deeply skeptical of VoIP as a full-time landline replacement. In a few more years when they get the kinks a bit better ironed out, I may feel different, but things like 'no 911' are simply a deal-killer.

Hey marlo,

I totally understand. Although I've heard some people say that people continue to use their cell phone for that very purpose.

On the other hand, do you really want to be fumbling for your cell phone when there is a *real* emergency and seconds count?

... which is the reason why, like you, I use VOIP for reasons other than regular call service.

Cheers

The other limitation of any VOIP service is 911 dialing. This isn't supported with Skype.

We recently had the unfortunate need to dial 911 using our VOIP service (Vonage) and it didn't turn out as smoothly as we thought it should have. Three minutes on the phone felt like hours for my wife trying to explain to the dispatcher that she did dial 911.

Skype will be great for "casual" calls, but never for emergencies.
