I appreciate your take on this issue.  I didn&#039;t actually read the original 37Signals post as a criticism of &#039;publicity buttons&#039; per se. I took it to be a warning that those buttons won&#039;t do anything for you unless your content is solid.  That&#039;s kind of an obvious point, but who among us hasn&#039;t wasted a post or two on making obvious points?</description>

With the 100 millionth websites, reality is you&#039;re right.  Its damn hard work, and no one should have to justify trying to marketing and get free pub for their work as long as its ethical.

And those icons might be an eyesore -- but they&#039;re sure as hell not unethical (cough EDELMAN cough!)

Reality is: today it&#039;s hard work to grow a blog. Anything that does not conflict with the goals of the blog, readability for your readers, and ethical online behavior is good.</description>
