Was cruising around the blogosphere and hit upon one of the many “how to start blogging” tutorials that litters the landscape. I have to admit that I am pretty new at this — and actually have been blogging in earnest for about one month.
5Thirtyone.com makes an interesting point, almost foot-noting his article about blogging:
Derek at 5Thirtyone says:
Sooner or later, you’ll experience [what I like to call] the “peak & fall”. Simply put, your blog will garner the attention of a unique number of followers who you have - surprisingly - managed to hypnotize with your ramblings. This momentary self-proclaimed feeling of accomplishment will henceforth be known as the “peak”.
Unfortunately, your sense of accomplishment & pride will soon be replaced with sadness & disappointment during a period known as the “fall”. The “fall” refers to a period wherein most bloggers can differentiate between bona fide readers and temporary visitors.
During these lowest moments, the important idea is to remain focused. If you begin to feel as though the walls are caving, that your blogging topics are running dry, or that readership is at a level which would make it difficult to re-establish that blogging confidence which you began with, take a breather. Unplug and re-analyze your blogging intentions, goal(s), and or expectations.
Now — I have no idea where I’m at, but week to week I have been lucky enough to get numbers that go *up* (thanks everyone who has supported this website in any small way … you know who you are). And I have to give props to stuff that I haven’t hit upon before because, let’s face it, most of the stuff you read is recycled and recycled (see the many articles on an “echochamber”) — and I have to admit that I’ve never even heard of “The Fall”.
I wonder at what point “The Fall” happens for most folks.
Is it an epiphany of sorts? Sort of like a moment in time where the clouds part and a moment of self-actualization happens?
Or is it more of an actual drop in readership … perhaps spurred by the realization that your blog isn’t new, hot, or trendy anymore — and that OTHER blog … well, it does that better. ;)
Anyway, if I ever hit it, I will be sure to let you all know — or, for any of the dozen of you in the audience, you could share with us what The Fall is like (if you’ve ever experienced it).

I’ve never heard of the Fall and I don’t think you’re going to find one as long as you keep doing what you’re doing. :)

I would agree with Liz. Though I am new also at blogging and not an expert. I only take blogging advice from a few blogs, Liz is one of them, 531 is not. I have a pretty good bullshit meter.

Well, I’m not sure what its all about really … it sounded more dramatic than anything else.
I’m not sure if what he means is a better perception of your traffic than anything else — when I check out my stats through google analytics, the percentage of visitors that are returning visitors is rising … so I don’t know if that’s “the Fall”, because overall the number of unique visitors is actually rising.
Well, I’d be interested to hear if anyone else has heard of this phenomenon. ;)
Thanks for stopping by Roy ;)
